Sumter High School is mourning the loss of assistant basketball coach Trevino Hall, who was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Sumter County on Monday afternoon.

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker confirmed that Hall died as a result of the wreck, which happened around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Cane Savannah Road and St. Paul’s Church Road.

What Happened on Cane Savannah Road

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Hall was driving a Hyundai SUV north on Cane Savannah Road when a Ford SUV traveling south crossed the center line and struck his vehicle head-on. Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said Hall died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Ford SUV was also injured and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.

A Coach Remembered as “Far More Than a Coach”

Sumter High School announced Hall’s death in a statement on Tuesday, remembering him as someone whose impact went well beyond the basketball court.

“Coach Hall was far more than a coach. He was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and a pillar of the Sumter community,” the school said.

The school noted that Hall spent four years on the Sumter High coaching staff, in addition to his work with the Sumter Splash AAU program, where he mentored young athletes throughout the community.

“Over his four years on our coaching staff and in the Sumter Splash AAU program, he invested in the lives of countless young people, leaving an impact that will continue for generations,” the statement read.

Colleagues and students described Hall as someone who brought energy and warmth to every practice and game. The school said he was known for his humor, his genuine spirit, and his willingness to help every player he coached, regardless of their skill level.

Sumter School District Superintendent Dr. Gerald Gary also released a statement Tuesday afternoon, calling Hall a dedicated mentor whose commitment to young people went far beyond basketball.

“His commitment to supporting and encouraging young people extended far beyond the basketball court, and he will be remembered for the positive impact he had on the Sumter High School community,” Gary said.

The district added that counseling services were made available Tuesday morning at Sumter High School for students and staff who needed support while processing the loss.

Both the school and the district extended condolences to Hall’s wife, children, family, friends, colleagues, and the many athletes he coached over the years. Community members have described his death as a significant loss for the Sumter area, where he was widely known for his mentorship and involvement with local youth sports.
