Richmond Man Alphonso Satchell Shot Dead Near Hull Street Convenience Store in Early Morning Attack

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a quiet stretch of Hull Street in Richmond’s Southside became the scene of a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 47-year-old man and sent another to the hospital with serious injuries.

What began as an emergency call just after 2 a.m. quickly turned into one of the most evidence-heavy crime scenes investigators had worked in recent memory, and the ripple effects of that night are still being felt across a community already worn down by repeated violence.

Richmond Police officers responded to the 3400 block of Hull Street at approximately 2:13 a.m. on Saturday, May 2.

Upon arrival, they found Alphonso Satchell of Richmond lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the response, there was nothing officers could do. Satchell was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 47 years old.

The location sits just steps from the Jack Market and Deli convenience store, near the intersection of E 34th Street and Hull Street.

Crime scene tape cordoned off the sidewalk and portions of the street as forensic teams moved in to document what had happened.

According to sources close to the investigation, the volume of evidence left behind was significant enough that investigators actually ran short of numbered evidence placards, an unusual detail that underscores just how violent the encounter was.

A Second Victim and a Connected Investigation

Shortly after police secured the scene on Hull Street, a second man arrived at a local hospital on his own, suffering from a gunshot wound. He did not call for emergency services at the scene.

He drove himself in. Investigators later confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening, though the circumstances surrounding his arrival raised immediate questions. Richmond Police have since confirmed that the two incidents are directly connected and are being investigated together as part of a single case.

No suspect information has been released to the public. Major Crimes Detective B. Neifeld is leading the investigation and is urging anyone with knowledge of what happened that night to come forward.

The Richmond Medical Examiner will issue a final determination on Satchell’s cause and manner of death.

A Neighborhood Confronting a Difficult Pattern

The death of Alphonso Satchell did not occur in isolation. According to reporting from CBS 6, his killing marked the third homicide and the fifth shooting in just three days handled by Richmond’s Major Crimes unit on the Southside alone. That number is not a statistic that sits easily with residents or investigators.

It reflects a neighborhood absorbing repeated blows within a very short window of time, and it places significant pressure on the city’s ability to respond effectively and prevent further loss of life.

As of Sunday, the investigation remained active and ongoing. Richmond Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.

Satchell’s family and those who knew him are left waiting for answers that have not yet come.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective B. Neifeld at 804-646-3246 or reach out to Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
