SALISBURY, N.C. — A shooting in Salisbury on Sunday afternoon left one person dead and sent another to the hospital, according to local police.
The incident took place around 2 p.m. on June 28. Officers responded to a gas station, the Han Dee Hugo’s, located at the intersection of East Innes Street and Stokes Ferry Road, also referred to in some reports as Newsome Road.
That is where the two victims were discovered, though investigators say the actual shooting likely occurred several blocks away, near Bringle Ferry Road and Green Street.
What Police Found at the Scene
According to Major Travis Schulenberger of the Salisbury Police Department, when officers arrived, they found one victim already deceased.
The second victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police have stated that this person’s injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
The identity of the person killed has not been released. Authorities say they are withholding that information until the victim’s family has been properly notified.
As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made, and no suspects were in custody. The Salisbury Police Department, along with the State Bureau of Investigation, is continuing to look into what led up to the shooting and how the victims ended up at the gas station after the shooting reportedly happened elsewhere.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
News of the shooting spread quickly on social media, with many residents reacting with concern and frustration over the rise in violent incidents in the area.
Some commenters online referenced past safety issues in the city, while others used the moment to talk about personal safety and gun ownership.
Several people also raised questions about underlying social and economic factors they believe are tied to local crime trends, though those claims have not been independently verified by police or news outlets.
The Salisbury Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can be submitted directly to the department by calling 704-638-5333.
Residents who wish to remain anonymous can also contact Salisbury-Rowan Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245 or submit information through their online tip system.
This is the latest in a string of shootings that have put pressure on local law enforcement to address gun violence in the Rowan County area. So far, police have not released any details about a motive or about a possible suspect description, and the case remains open.
Officials have indicated that updates will be provided as the investigation develops, but for now, the community is left waiting for answers about who carried out the shooting and why two people ended up as victims at the gas station that afternoon.
If anyone in the community has surveillance footage, witnessed the events leading up to the shooting, or has any other relevant information, investigators are urging them to reach out as soon as possible. Police emphasized that even small details could help move the investigation forward.
Both local and regional outlets are continuing to follow the story as more information becomes available, including the identity of the deceased once family notification is complete and any updates on the condition of the surviving victim.
