Crash on Interstate 90 Near Mitchell Claims Two Lives
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash involved a 2018 Dodge Ram traveling eastbound between the Mitchell exits along Interstate 90.
For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway, entered the south ditch, and struck a guard cable near a bridge over Rowley Street.
The impact caused the truck to fall onto Rowley Street below, where it subsequently collided with a retaining wall.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 34-year-old Shane Tyler Willis of Pierre.
A passenger, 38-year-old Melynda Jean Willis, also of Pierre, was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both individuals sustained fatal injuries.
Officials confirmed that all occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the incident.
Two infant passengers were also in the truck. Authorities reported that the children suffered minor injuries and were transported for medical care.
No further details regarding their current condition have been released.
Preliminary findings from investigators suggest the sequence of events began when the pickup drifted off the roadway for unknown reasons.
The vehicle then struck infrastructure near the bridge approach before dropping onto the lower roadway surface.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to examine what factors may have contributed to the crash, including road conditions, driver input, and mechanical issues.
Investigation Continues, and Community Prepares Vigil
Law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as findings are confirmed.
Crash reconstruction teams are expected to review physical evidence from the scene to understand better how the vehicle left the interstate and the exact timing of each impact.
The loss has deeply affected the Pierre community, where both Shane and Melynda Willis were known residents. In response to the tragedy, a public vigil has been scheduled to honor their lives.
The gathering is planned for Tuesday evening at Steamboat Park Picnic Pavilion in Pierre, where family members, friends, and community members are expected to come together in remembrance.
Local reports indicate that the couple’s passing has prompted an outpouring of support for the surviving children and extended family.
Community members have begun sharing condolences and organizing support efforts as the investigation continues.
Officials have not released any indication of impairment or external cause at this stage, and they emphasize that conclusions will depend on the final results of the investigation.
The Highway Patrol is urging anyone with additional information about the crash or events leading up to it to come forward.
As Pierre and the surrounding communities mourn the loss of Shane Willis and Melynda Willis, authorities continue their work to determine exactly what led to the fatal sequence on Interstate 90, while also ensuring the care and recovery of the injured children involved in the crash.
