A mother has taken a bold step toward justice after her child was allegedly assaulted by a fellow learner inside a classroom at Tlakula High School, with a case officially opened at Kwa-Thema South African Police Service on 13 May 2026 at approximately 18:00.
Nokuthula Nkutha, the mother of the learner seen being assaulted in a video that has since circulated widely on social media, confirmed that the disturbing incident took place inside the classroom, raising serious questions about teacher supervision and learner safety at the school.
The video sparked public outrage across communities, with many parents and community members demanding immediate action from school authorities.
“My child was beaten at school while this was happening inside the classroom. I am deeply hurt and angry because I want to know where the teacher was during the incident,” Nkutha said.
The mother confirmed she had been waiting for feedback from the school principal, who was himself awaiting guidance from the district office and the Member of the Executive Council responsible for education. A meeting was expected to be convened to address the matter formally.
SGB Response Draws Community Anger
What has further fuelled public frustration is the response from the School Governing Body. Reports emerged that the chairperson of the SGB suggested, following internal investigations, that the learners involved were merely playing. That statement did not sit well with community members who viewed the video.
Phummie Msimanga, a community member, said,
“The chairperson of that school said through their investigations those learners were playing. Accomplice naye Lo Chairperson wakhona.”
Yvonne Mtetwa added,
“So SGB didn’t say they were playing, it means they saw the game in this video. They are so old. I don’t understand, SGB come and make us understand, we are all angry as parents. We don’t play when they say it takes a village to raise a child.”
The community reaction online was swift and unified, with many calling for the bully to face consequences and for school authorities to be held accountable for the supervision failure that allowed the incident to happen during school hours.
A Pattern of Bullying at Tlakula
What has made the matter even more heartbreaking is a comment from a former learner who revealed that bullying at Tlakula High School has claimed a life before. Pasie Seka wrote:
“Tlakula High School, our child is no longer in this world because of bullying there. She was doing Grade 10. We buried her two weeks back.”
That revelation has intensified calls for urgent intervention at the school, with community member Mthuthuzeli Skosana urging schools, parents, learners, and stakeholders to unite.
“This current case must actually activate us to unite and act as SGBs, parents, teachers and learners,” he said.
Thulani Malinga Mbongiseni directed his frustration at school leadership, stating:
“Why would the head of the school wait for guidance somewhere else when this happened under his watch. Be a leader and make decisions.”
As the matter is now in the hands of law enforcement, the community continues to watch closely, demanding that the safety of learners inside Tlakula High School be treated as a matter of urgency.
