Van, Texas, Freshman Kayden Palmer Remembered for Kindness, Leadership After Tragic Death

The Van Independent School District is grieving the death of freshman Kayden Palmer, a 16-year-old student remembered for his infectious smile, kind heart, and servant spirit. Palmer died on June 25, 2026, following what the district described as a tragic accident.

Palmer had just completed his freshman year at Van High School, where he was known across campus for his energy, leadership, and willingness to help others.

School officials said he earned honors for his integrity and character, qualities that left a lasting mark on classmates, teachers, and coaches alike.

“Kayden was a beloved member of the Vandal family whose infectious smile, kind heart, and servant spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” the district said in a statement.

A Life of Faith, Sports, and Family

Born May 13, 2010, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Palmer grew up with a love for music, dancing, and laughter that friends say was contagious. He never missed a chance to tell the people in his life that he loved them, a habit that those close to him say defined his character.

At Van High School, Palmer was a multi sport athlete who played football and competed in track and field. He was also an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, an organization that combined his faith with his love of sports.

His faith extended beyond the football field. Palmer took part in the Student Ministry at First Baptist Church of Van, where he came to know his faith more deeply and built relationships within his church community.

Outside of school, Palmer enjoyed hunting, though fishing held a special place in his heart, even on days when nothing was biting. He was a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and had hopes of one day serving in the United States Coast Guard, according to the school district.

Palmer is survived by his parents, Rachel and Mike Salyards of Van, and his father, Brett Palmer of Edmond, Oklahoma. He also leaves behind his sisters, Emery Palmer and Ashley Salyards, and his brother, Colby Salyards.

He is further survived by his grandparents, Danny and Deborah Janway, Joe and Carolyn Salyards, Marcia Palmer, and Greg and Francy Palmer, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Jake Janway.

Community Invited to Celebration of Life

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Van.

Family members have asked that instead of flowers or other gifts, those wishing to honor Kayden’s memory take time to make someone smile, tell loved ones they are loved, or play a round of “Would You Rather,” a nod to one of his favorite games.

Van ISD is asking the community to keep the Palmer family, along with Kayden’s friends and everyone affected by his death, in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

“As a district, we grieve together while also celebrating the remarkable young man Kayden was,” the statement read. “His smile, energy, compassion, and love for others will forever remain a part of the Vandal legacy.”

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hilliard Funeral Home, Fairway Crematory and Memorial Gardens in Van, Texas.
