A 41-year-old motorcyclist died early Saturday morning after a collision with a vehicle at the intersection of East Broadway Boulevard and North Campbell Avenue in Tucson, according to the Tucson Police Department.
Officers responded to the scene around 2 a.m. on reports of a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle. The Tucson Fire Department also responded and pronounced the rider dead at the scene. He was identified as Jose Nadir Parra. His next of kin has been notified.
What Investigators Found
According to police, witness interviews along with roadway and video evidence showed that Parra was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Broadway Boulevard in the median lane.
He failed to stop for a red light at the intersection with Campbell Avenue and was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound through the intersection.
Police said Parra was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Investigators determined that his failure to stop for the red light was the major contributing factor in the collision.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Parra has not been identified publicly. Authorities said the driver was not impaired at the time of the crash. Medical records will be reviewed to determine whether Parra was impaired.
Investigation Continues
No charges or citations have been issued in connection with the crash. The Tucson Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional information may be released at a later date.
The crash is one of several fatal collisions reported in the Tucson area in recent days. Local news outlets have also reported other deadly crashes, including a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 10 and a rollover crash that closed an intersection in Oro Valley, underscoring concerns among residents and city leaders about traffic safety on major roadways.
Tucson’s mayor and city council have recently discussed the possibility of reinstating photo enforcement cameras at intersections across the city, a move that some officials argue could help reduce the number of red light violations and resulting collisions. The discussion comes as the city continues to see crashes at high traffic intersections like Broadway and Campbell.
Community members near the intersection have expressed concern about the frequency of crashes in that area, though officials have not released data specifically comparing this intersection to others in the city.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Tucson Police Department as the investigation continues. Police have not said whether any additional charges could be filed once the investigation concludes and medical and toxicology results are available.
The intersection of Broadway and Campbell is a busy thoroughfare connecting central and eastern Tucson, and it sees significant traffic at all hours, including overnight. Officials have not indicated whether any temporary safety measures, such as additional signage or signal timing adjustments, are being considered for the intersection following this latest fatal crash.
This is at least the second fatal motorcycle-related incident reported in the Tucson area this year, though exact numbers were not immediately available from city traffic safety records.
Police ask that drivers remain cautious at intersections and obey traffic signals, particularly during early morning hours when visibility can be reduced and fewer vehicles are on the road, which can sometimes lead drivers to misjudge oncoming traffic or assume an intersection is clear.
