Sandbridge Road Shut Down in Virginia Beach After Driver Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Jeep Rollover

Sandbridge Road in Virginia Beach was closed in both directions for much of Saturday morning, July 4, after a single-vehicle crash left a man with life-threatening injuries, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.

What Happened

Police say Emergency Communications and Citizen Services got word of the crash around 7:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Sandbridge Road. Officers and EMS personnel who responded to the scene found a man suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

A preliminary investigation determined that the man had been driving a Jeep that flipped and landed in a ditch along the roadway. Police confirmed he was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and no other occupants were involved.

The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit has taken over the investigation to determine exactly what led to the rollover. As of Saturday morning, authorities had not released an estimated timeline for when the road would reopen to normal traffic.

Detour and Traffic Impact

Because Sandbridge Road serves as the main route into the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach, its closure created significant travel headaches for residents and beachgoers on one of the busiest holiday weekends of the summer.

To keep people moving, police set up a detour through the Dam Neck Annex of Naval Air Station Oceana. Officers and military personnel have been stationed at the base to guide drivers through the back gates, which connect to Sandpiper Road as an alternate path toward Sandbridge.

Despite the detour, officials are warning drivers to expect heavy delays and a strong law enforcement and military presence in the area throughout the day.

Anyone not specifically needing to travel through the 700 block of Sandbridge Road has been urged to avoid the area entirely while the investigation and cleanup continue.

The timing of the crash, on the morning of the Fourth of July, added extra strain to local traffic patterns already stretched thin by holiday travel, fireworks preparations, and beach crowds heading toward the Virginia Beach oceanfront and surrounding neighborhoods.

What We Still Don’t Know

Police have not yet released the identity of the driver, his current medical condition beyond the initial report of life-threatening injuries, or a specific cause for why the Jeep left the roadway and overturned.

It also remains unclear whether speed, weather, road conditions, or another factor played a role in the crash.

Local outlets including WAVY, The Virginian-Pilot, and 13News Now have all confirmed the basic details of the crash and the resulting road closure, though none have reported updates beyond Saturday morning as of this writing.

Virginia Beach police have asked the public to continue avoiding the 700 block of Sandbridge Road until further notice and to plan extra travel time if heading toward the Sandbridge area for the holiday.

Updates are expected as the Traffic Safety Unit continues its investigation into the cause of the crash.

Residents and visitors planning to travel to or from Sandbridge this weekend should check current road conditions before heading out, given the ongoing closure and detour through the Dam Neck back gates.
