Sydni Marie MacKinnon, a 27-year-old Registered Nurse from Belleville, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, passed away unexpectedly on June 7, 2026.
Known for her warmth, compassion, and infectious smile, Sydni touched countless lives through her work at Yarmouth Regional Hospital and through the many friendships she built over her short but meaningful life.
Born in Yarmouth on May 12, 1999, to Gerard and Robin (Everest) MacKinnon, Sydni grew up to become someone her family, colleagues, and patients all came to rely on. She chose nursing not as a career but as a calling, driven by a genuine desire to care for others.
Her colleagues on 4 East remembered her for her humor, her reliability, and the kind of steadiness that made difficult shifts feel manageable.
A former coworker, Hailey Marie Williams, described Sydni as her partner on the floor, someone she will miss for the late-night laughs and the quiet, meaningful conversations that carried her through her own hard times.
Another coworker, Merla Nickerson, recalled the way Sydni always seemed to be there during her short visits back to the unit, greeting her with a big smile and sparkling eyes, even years after they had stopped working together regularly.
A Life Rooted in Family and a Love for Dance
Beyond the hospital walls, Sydni was defined by her deep love for family and her lifelong passion for dance. She began dancing with Kidzact at a young age and went on to earn multiple dance scholarships through years of dedication and natural talent.
Whether performing or simply moving through everyday life, she carried herself with the kind of grace that felt effortless to those watching but came from years of hard work behind the scenes.
Her bond with her sister Callie was one of the defining relationships of her life. The two were not just siblings but best friends, filling their time together with laughter, shared memories, and the kind of unconditional support that does not need to be asked for.
Sydni was also close to her father, Gerard, speaking with him daily and always finding in him a soft place to land when life got complicated.
Her mother, Robin, served as a source of guidance and wisdom, someone whose strength and compassion quietly shaped the woman Sydni was becoming.
She also shared a loving relationship with her boyfriend, Logan Ryer, who provided steady encouragement and companionship throughout their time together.
Sydni is survived by her parents, Gerard and Robin MacKinnon, her sister Callie MacKinnon, her boyfriend Logan Ryer, her paternal grandmother Mary MacKinnon, her maternal grandfather Ronald (Sharon) Everest, her maternal grandmother Bonnie Hansford, and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, coworkers, and patients whose lives she touched. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Gerard MacKinnon Sr.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Yarmouth Wesleyan Church, with Pastor A.J. Plaizier officiating. Cremation has taken place under the care of Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium in Yarmouth.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be directed to the Let Your Light Shine, Jevin Link Society, a cause that reflects the spirit Sydni carried with her every day of her life.
