A community in the San Francisco Bay Area is grieving after a young boy died last week at an elementary school in Burlingame, California.
Gavin Tsui, just 6 years old, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, after a table fell on him while he was attending an after-school program at McKinley Elementary School, located at 701 Paloma Ave.
The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office confirmed the boy’s identity, and his family has since spoken publicly about the heartbreaking loss.
The incident occurred during what should have been a routine afternoon for a young child. According to Burlingame School District Superintendent Marla Silversmith, who sent a message to district families following the accident, Gavin was not a student enrolled in the district.
He was participating in a program run by a private organization that was using space on the McKinley campus at the time of the accident.
First responders, including a fire truck and an ambulance, were called to the school that day. McKinley Principal Susana Fernandez initially described the situation to families as an isolated medical incident.
The full circumstances of how the table fell and why it caused such severe harm have not been publicly released.
The district cited the family’s privacy and an ongoing review as the reasons for withholding specific details about how the tragedy unfolded.
School District Responds With Closures and a Safety Review
In the days following the accident, Superintendent Silversmith outlined several steps the district had taken in response to what happened. All district multipurpose rooms were temporarily secured and closed while officials reviewed procedures governing how third parties rent and use school facilities.
The district made clear it was treating the matter seriously, though officials maintained they believed it to be an isolated event.
McKinley Elementary is home to a variety of after-school programs. The school’s own web page lists enrichment activities such as sports, art, dance, and Spanish language classes, all offered through outside providers.
Champions, one of the private companies that operates a before-and-after-school care program at McKinley, confirmed through a statement that Gavin was not a participant in its program.
As of this writing, it has not been confirmed publicly which specific program he was attending when the accident happened.
A Community Left Heartbroken
The loss of a child under any circumstances is devastating, and for the families, staff, and students connected to McKinley Elementary, the weight of this tragedy has been deeply felt.
Superintendent Silversmith expressed the district’s grief in her message to parents, saying the hearts of everyone in the school community were with Gavin’s family and all those affected by the loss.
The district announced that counseling and support resources would be made available to students and families in the aftermath.
Gavin Tsui was only 6 years old, at an age when children are discovering the world around them, making friends, and simply being kids.
His death has prompted important questions about safety oversight for private programs operating on public school campuses, questions that school administrators across the region may now find themselves answering.
