Kiersten A. Ryherd, 22, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026, two days after her birthday, following injuries she sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Black Hawk County.
She was born on May 12, 2004, and her death has left a deep wound in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Funeral arrangements are currently pending through Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa, where friends and family may leave online condolences at www.boothbyfuneral.com.
The funeral home is also accepting flower orders and memorial tree plantings in her honor.
Kiersten’s passing comes at a particularly painful moment for her family.
Her father, Tom Ryherd, has recently been named the incoming superintendent of the Perry Community School District in Perry, Iowa, a role that was meant to mark a fresh chapter for the Ryherd family as they prepared to relocate to a new community. Instead, the family now faces unimaginable grief in the middle of a major life transition.
The news of Kiersten’s death was shared publicly during the Perry Community School District’s annual End of Year Awards and Retirement Recognition ceremony held Tuesday at the Perry Performing Arts Center.
School Board President Linda Andorf paused during the event to acknowledge the tragedy, asking those gathered to keep the Ryherd family in their thoughts.
“They Ryherd family will need our support more than ever as they move to a new community,” Andorf said during the ceremony.
The timing makes the loss even more difficult to process. Tom Ryherd was preparing to step into a significant leadership role in a district that, by all accounts, has been through considerable change in recent years.
He was set to take over from retiring Superintendent Clark Wicks, who served Perry schools for 32 of his 47 years in public education.
It was supposed to be a moment of optimism and new beginnings for both the district and the Ryherd family. Instead, the family is now grieving the loss of their youngest daughter just days before that new chapter was to begin.
Kiersten was 22 years old and had her whole life ahead of her. She had just celebrated her birthday on May 12, making the timing of her death even more heartbreaking for those closest to her.
Details surrounding the accident in Black Hawk County have not been fully released, but the loss has already resonated far beyond her immediate circle.
Communities across Iowa, particularly those connected to education, have begun offering condolences to the Ryherd family.
The outpouring of sympathy reflects not only the grief felt for a young life lost but also the recognition that the people who dedicate themselves to public service, as Tom Ryherd has done throughout his career, deserve the full support of the communities they serve.
As Perry prepares to welcome its new superintendent, the district and its families are being asked to hold space for a man who is grieving deeply.
Kiersten Ryherd is remembered with love, and her family is in the thoughts of many as they navigate one of the hardest moments any parent can face.
