A 24-year-old Camden man was shot and killed in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 9, 2026, prompting a homicide investigation by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Camden County Police Department.
Luis J. Bonet of Camden was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of Baird Boulevard and Boyd Street shortly after midnight.
Officers from the Camden County Police Department responded to the 200 block of Morse Street at approximately 12:23 a.m. following a ShotSpotter activation, a gunfire detection system used throughout the city. When they arrived, they located Bonet, who had been struck by at least one bullet.
Emergency responders transported Bonet to Cooper University Hospital, where doctors worked to save his life. Despite their efforts, Bonet was pronounced dead at approximately 12:36 a.m., just minutes after officers found him at the scene.
Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez confirmed that detectives are actively working the case. As of the time of this report, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The use of ShotSpotter technology played a role in alerting officers to the shooting. The system, which uses acoustic sensors placed throughout urban neighborhoods, detects the sound of gunfire and automatically notifies police of the approximate location.
In this case, the activation brought officers to the Morse Street area, where they quickly located Bonet nearby at the Baird Boulevard and Boyd Street intersection.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been released by authorities. Investigators have not disclosed whether there were any witnesses at the scene or whether surveillance footage from the surrounding area is being reviewed as part of the inquiry.
This shooting comes as Camden continues to deal with incidents of gun violence that affect families and communities throughout the city. The loss of a 24-year-old man adds to a painful toll that residents and local officials have long been working to address through both law enforcement efforts and community outreach programs.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have seen or heard something in the area of Baird Boulevard and Boyd Street around the time of the shooting to come forward.
