A Tuesday evening shooting in the parking lot of the Fred Meyer store in Wood Village, Oregon, left one person dead and prompted a swift law enforcement response from both the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and Gresham Police.
The incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. near Northeast Park Lane and Northeast 223rd Avenue, sending shockwaves through a community that had simply gathered for an ordinary evening of shopping.
Deputies and paramedics arrived to find the victim lying unresponsive on the pavement. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency dispatchers and bystanders who had already begun CPR before medics arrived, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released by authorities.
One woman who witnessed the aftermath told reporters she had stopped by for some late-night grocery shopping when she came upon a deeply unsettling scene. Other shoppers were already performing CPR on a man lying on the ground.
She described the experience as completely unexpected and deeply jarring, something no routine trip to the store could have prepared her for.
Investigation Underway, Threat to Public Deemed Low
Law enforcement moved quickly following the shooting. A person of interest was detained in connection with the incident, and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office stated there is currently no known threat to the public.
Authorities have not confirmed the relationship between the detained individual and the victim, nor have they disclosed what led to the shooting.
Investigators asked community members to avoid the south side of the store while detectives worked to process the scene and gather evidence.
