A search that began in the early morning hours of June 6th ended in heartbreak for the Durand community when law enforcement discovered the body of a 54-year-old construction supervisor at a worksite in Durand Township, Pepin County, Wisconsin.

Christian Jean Bates of rural Durand was reported missing after he failed to return from his shift with Nelson Telephone Cooperative of Durand, where he worked as a construction supervisor.

Colleagues or family members alerted authorities in the early hours of June 6th when Bates did not come back as expected. Deputies from the Pepin County Sheriff’s Office responded and launched a search to locate him.

Around 3 a.m., the search came to a devastating end. Bates was found dead at a worksite located within Durand Township.

The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been fully explained, and a cause of death has not been officially determined at this time. Authorities have not released additional details about the scene or the nature of what was found there, stating only that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, commonly known as OSHA, has since been called in to examine the incident. The involvement of OSHA signals that investigators are taking seriously the possibility that this may have been a work-related fatality.

Construction sites carry inherent risks, and federal workplace safety investigators will now work alongside local authorities to piece together what happened during Bates’ final hours on the job. The results of their findings will likely take some time before being made public.
