Veteran Meteorologist Mike Lozano Passes Away, Leaving Behind a Legacy in Broadcasting and Science

The broadcasting community is mourning the loss of Mike Lozano, a longtime meteorologist whose work on television and passion for science earned him the respect of colleagues, viewers, and fellow enthusiasts across the country.

News of his passing was shared by family members through social media posts, where they reflected on the many roles he played throughout his life as a father, brother, mentor, and friend.

His son, Khail Michael Lozano, announced that his father passed away early in the morning. Remembering him with affection, he described Mike as one of the smartest and funniest people he had ever known. He said he had always been proud to call him his father and expressed the deep heartbreak felt by the family following the loss.

Mike’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from relatives and former coworkers who shared stories highlighting both his professional achievements and personal character.

Family and Colleagues Share Memories

Among those paying tribute was Mike’s son Robert, who recalled years of adventures spent with his father.

Their shared experiences included broadcasting from the Iowa State Fair, appearing together in a commercial, and traveling to Missouri to witness the total solar eclipse in 2017.

Robert said his father played a major role in developing his interest in science and astronomy. He remembered receiving his first telescope and an astronomy book from Mike, gifts that sparked a lifelong fascination with the night sky. He also credited his father with encouraging him to pursue projects related to astronomy, including the construction of an observatory that later became an important part of his life.

Beyond science, Robert remembered his father’s distinctive sense of humor, a quality he believes was passed down through generations. Those close to Mike often describe him as someone who could make people laugh while also sharing knowledge and insight.

Mike’s brother, Edward Lozano, also shared his grief following the loss. He praised Mike’s career as a meteorologist and noted that he worked at several television stations during his years in broadcasting, including KSAT 12. Edward also highlighted his brother’s involvement in amateur radio, where he was known by the call sign K5RLY.

Former colleagues from the broadcasting industry remembered Mike as a dedicated professional who enjoyed connecting with audiences and coworkers alike. Jamie Grout shared memories from Mike’s time at WHO TV and KCCI TV, recalling appearances during Children’s Miracle Network Telethons in the 1980s.

John R. King, who worked alongside Mike at Palmer Broadcasting, remembered him as a fun and easygoing colleague. He reflected on the enjoyable atmosphere of their workplace and recalled humorous moments that demonstrated Mike’s ability to bring laughter to those around him.

As family members continue to celebrate his life, many say Mike Lozano will be remembered not only for his years forecasting the weather but also for his curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm for science. His influence remains evident in the lives of the people he inspired, both at home and throughout his broadcasting career.
