El Segundo, California, is mourning the loss of Max Hale, a standout water polo player and U.S. Army Ranger who died this week while training as a Private First Class with C Company, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.
Max grew up immersed in the sport, one of five Hale siblings to come through the El Segundo High School water polo program. He became a four-year varsity letterman and earned Team MVP honors multiple times, along with yearly All-League MVP and MOP awards and All-CIF recognition. He served as captain of the 2023 team that finished the season undefeated and won the CIF Championship.
By the time he graduated in 2024, Max held the school records for career goals, most goals in a single game, career hat tricks, single-season assists, and total career offensive points, a resume that placed him among the program’s all-time greats.
He went on to play a standout season at El Camino College before enlisting in the United States Army, where he earned a spot in the elite Ranger Regiment.
Those who coached and played alongside him described a young man whose talent was matched only by his personality.
According to the team’s tribute, he could show up to overnight tournaments without so much as a swimsuit or towel, carrying only a cup of mate and his aunt’s pink sandals, then borrow a Speedo and score eight goals in a game while still finding time to mentor teammates. Family friend Tom Lindsey recalled that Max had a grin that could light up a room and called him a gentleman in every sense.
Family Remembers a Devoted Son and Brother
Max’s mother, Sara Stevenson Hale, shared a heartfelt message honoring her son’s memory, writing that words feel insufficient to capture the depth of the family’s loss. She described Max as an incredible son who always had her back, a brother who acted as a friend, protector, and biggest supporter to his siblings, and a loyal friend and devoted teammate.
She said his faith and devotion to family, friends, and country were central to who he was, adding that he had an enormous heart and beautiful soul.
The El Segundo Water Polo community has been flooded with messages of support, with alumni, coaches, and family friends sending condolences and describing how deeply Max’s energy and character touched everyone around him.
The program has vowed to honor his legacy in the seasons ahead, closing its tribute with a simple promise: they will love him forever, wearing the number 11 he made his own.
Max Hale is survived by his family, teammates, and a community that says his memory will never fade.
