Former Police Officer and School Board Member, San Miguel, Charged With Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child

Daniel San Miguel, a former Refugio Police Department officer and current Goliad ISD Board of Trustees member, was arrested in Goliad County on June 6, 2026, facing serious criminal charges that have sent shockwaves through multiple South Texas communities.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, San Miguel was arrested by Texas Rangers and faces charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and official oppression. The arrest came just four days after he was terminated from the Refugio Police Department on June 2, 2026.

Refugio Police Department Confirms Termination Before Arrest

The Refugio Police Department confirmed in a public statement that San Miguel was let go from the department before his arrest took place. The department said it is fully cooperating with investigators handling the case, but noted that due to the sensitive nature of the charges, it would not be releasing additional details at this time.

San Miguel had been serving as a School Resource Officer assigned to Refugio ISD from January 2026 through May 2026 under an intergovernmental agreement between the school district and the Refugio Police Department.

Refugio ISD acknowledged its role with the district and described the situation as a matter of tremendous community concern. School officials stated that the information currently available to them remains limited.

Goliad ISD Responds as Board Member Faces Charges

Goliad ISD also released a statement following the news of San Miguel’s arrest. The district confirmed that he currently holds a seat on the Goliad ISD Board of Trustees but stressed that the alleged conduct is not connected to Goliad ISD operations, employees, or students. The district said it would not comment further beyond that acknowledgment.

The Goliad County Sheriff’s Office was contacted for additional information regarding the investigation. A spokesperson declined to comment, and no further details about the circumstances of the case have been made public by law enforcement at this time.

The arrest has drawn significant attention across the region, given San Miguel’s dual roles in both law enforcement and local school governance. Community members in both Refugio and Goliad have expressed concern, particularly given that San Miguel had direct access to students in his capacity as a school resource officer during the months leading up to his termination and arrest.

Texas Rangers are continuing their investigation into the matter. It remains unclear at this point whether additional charges could follow or whether more individuals may be connected to the case.

This story continues to develop. Additional details are expected to emerge as the investigation moves forward and legal proceedings begin. Both school districts involved have indicated they will provide further updates to their communities as more information becomes available to them through official channels.
