Northport, NY — James L. Mahon, a longtime Huntington resident and Army veteran, passed away on July 4, 2026, after a long illness. He was 85 years old, having been born on November 16, 1940.
Mahon was born to a New York City police officer and grew up with an older sister who helped raise him. In 1959, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a military policeman at Fort Hood, Texas. He carried that sense of duty throughout his life, passing it down to his children and grandchildren, and lived long enough to witness the nation’s 250th birthday.
In 1964, he married Cathleen Dinan, and the couple settled in Huntington, Long Island, where they raised their family together for the decades that followed. Those who knew him described a marriage and household built on steady love and support through both good times and hard ones.
He is remembered by loved ones as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose influence reached far beyond his immediate family circle.
