Investigators in New Hampshire are working to piece together what led to a deadly encounter between two men at a home in Peterborough over the weekend. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office confirmed Monday that the case remains under active investigation following a report of a disturbance on Grove Street Sunday night.
According to officials, Peterborough police were called to the residence, located near the west end of Grove Street close to the town’s police station, around 8:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found an adult man lying in the driveway with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inside the home, authorities located a second adult man, who is believed to live at the residence, suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been publicly released.
What Investigators Know So Far
Officials with the Attorney General’s Office say the incident appears to stem from a direct interaction between the two men involved. At this stage, no additional suspects are being sought, and authorities have stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the general public.
Community members reported seeing a heavy police presence in the area Sunday evening, with the section of Grove Street near the police station cordoned off for hours as ambulances and investigators moved through the neighborhood.
The New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit was called in to assist local officers, a standard step in cases involving a death under unclear circumstances.
Details about what triggered the violence have not been made public. Investigators have not released the names of either man, and no charges have been announced as of Monday morning. Officials noted that the case is still developing and that more information may be released as the investigation continues.
A Neighborhood on Edge
Grove Street is a residential stretch located close to Peterborough’s downtown and its police headquarters, making Sunday’s events especially jarring for people living nearby. Local outlets reported that residents described a chaotic scene as emergency vehicles lined the street and officers worked to secure the area.
Peterborough, a small town in the Monadnock region of southern New Hampshire, sees relatively few violent crimes of this nature, and news of the shooting and stabbing spread quickly through the community.
The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, a local paper based just blocks from the scene, was among the first outlets to report on the incident, noting that police remained on site well into the night gathering evidence.
Both state and local investigators are continuing to review evidence from the home and interview witnesses in hopes of establishing a clearer timeline of what happened before officers arrived. Because the Attorney General’s Office is involved, any death investigation involving potential criminal conduct in New Hampshire is automatically reviewed by that office, regardless of whether charges are eventually filed.
Authorities have not indicated when new details might be released, but they reiterated that the investigation remains active and that anyone with relevant information is encouraged to come forward. For now, residents on Grove Street and throughout Peterborough are left waiting for answers about what turned a quiet Sunday night into the scene of a fatal encounter.
