Body Found Near Burslem Cemetery in Search for Stoke-on-Trent Schoolboy Tyler Townsend, 14

A body has been discovered during the search for missing 14-year-old Tyler Townsend from Stoke-on-Trent, bringing an agonising four-day hunt to a devastating end.

Staffordshire Police confirmed the tragic news on Thursday evening, May 21, after officers located the body in a wooded area close to Burslem Cemetery shortly after 7 pm.

Tyler had last been seen at around 3 pm on Sunday, May 17, in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent. Police believed he had been heading toward Burslem Cemetery at the time of his disappearance, a location he was known to frequent regularly.

Extensive Search Launched After Teen Goes Missing

From the moment Tyler was reported missing, Staffordshire Police threw significant resources into finding him.

Officers carried out extensive searches across multiple areas of the city, including Hanley, Central Forest Park, Birches Head, Fegg Hayes, Bentilee, and the green space behind the Texaco filling station on Hanley Road in Sneyd Green. All of these were locations where Tyler was known to spend time.

A public appeal was also issued on Wednesday, May 20, with police releasing images and a description of the teenager in hopes that members of the community might come forward with information.

Tyler was described as being around 5ft 6in tall, of slim build, with short brown hair. At the time he went missing, he was wearing a black puffa jacket with the word “Lorenzo” written across the back, tracksuit bottoms, and grey and black Nike Jordan trainers.

The appeal asked anyone who had seen Tyler or knew of his whereabouts to contact police by calling 101 and quoting incident 143 of May 18.

Despite the public response and the efforts of officers on the ground, the search ended in heartbreak just a day after the appeal was made public.

Family Supported as Formal Identification Awaited

A Staffordshire Police spokesman confirmed the discovery late on Thursday night.

“We can sadly confirm that a body has been found in the search for missing 14-year-old Tyler, from Stoke-on-Trent,” the statement read. “He was last seen in the area on Sunday, May 17.

Officers have been carrying out extensive searches to try to find him since he was reported missing.”

The spokesman added,

“Shortly after 7 pm today, a body was found in a wooded area near Burslem Cemetery. Formal identification will take place in due course, but we believe the body to be that of missing boy Tyler. Officers are supporting his family at this deeply distressing time.”

Police confirmed that Tyler’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for His Majesty’s Coroner. StokeonTrentLive also reached out to West Midlands Ambulance Service for a comment following the tragedy.

The news has sent shockwaves through the Stoke-on-Trent community, with many having followed the search closely over the course of the week.

Tyler was just 14 years old, a schoolboy whose disappearance had prompted widespread concern among local residents and beyond.

As formal identification procedures are carried out, the thoughts of many across the city remain with Tyler’s family as they face what police described as a deeply distressing time.
