Middletown’s Beloved Mercy High School Teacher and Coach Darryl Bullock Dies at 73

Middletown, Connecticut, said goodbye to one of its most quietly remarkable residents on May 2, 2026, when Darryl E. Bullock passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 73.

Born on May 6, 1952, in Queens, New York, to Richard and Pearl Bullock, Darryl spent his life in pursuit of two things above nearly everything else: knowledge and the young people who deserved access to it.

He leaves behind a legacy that stretches from naval service to classroom walls to muddy cross-country trails, and a community that is measurably better for having known him.

Before he ever set foot in a school as an educator, Darryl served his country with distinction as a Commander in the United States Navy.

That experience shaped the disciplined, purposeful man that students and colleagues would come to admire for decades.

After his military service, he pursued academia with the same intensity, earning a PhD in Political Science from City University of New York, a credential that opened doors but never defined him.

What defined Darryl was what he did with his knowledge once he had it.

Three Decades on the Trail and in the Classroom

At Mercy University in Dobbs Ferry, New York, Darryl held several administrative roles, including Registrar and Director of Institutional Research and Planning.

But ask anyone who knew him during those years, and they will tell you that his proudest title was Cross Country Coach, a role he held for more than 30 years.

He did not just coach running. He coached young people through the particular kind of difficulty that distance running demands, the kind that teaches you something about yourself that no classroom can replicate.

He also served in the Office of Development at St. Catherine’s Academy in the Bronx before making his way to Connecticut, where a new chapter was waiting.

In Middletown, Darryl served as Principal of John Paul II School before joining the faculty at Mercy High School as a Civics teacher and Mock Trial Coach.

For years, he was a recognizable presence at school events, almost always with a camera in hand, looking for the genuine moments that come and go quickly if you are not paying attention.

He showed up to cross-country meets, track meets, basketball games, and soccer matches, not because he had to, but because those students mattered to him.

His commitment ran deep enough that he became an Associate of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, a reflection of how thoroughly he had woven himself into the fabric of an institution built on service.

A Husband, a Mentor, and a Man of Purpose

Beyond his professional life, Darryl was the devoted husband of Melissa Petrie Bullock, his wife and dance partner of 23 years.

Those who knew the couple say their bond was easy to see and genuine in every sense.

He is also survived by his sister Tyese Anderson, his nieces Crysta Burgess and Mallory DeRoche Merlino, his father-in-law Richard Petrie, and other family members who meant the world to him.

Darryl E. Bullock was 73 years old. He was a veteran, a scholar, a coach, a principal, and a teacher in the truest meaning of that word. Middletown will feel his absence for a long time.
